So many of our guest visit the area wineries to taste their wonderful wines. I thought it would be good to share a few tips on tasting.
They say it is best to not be wearing perfume or cologne as it could interfere with your ability to smell and even taste the wines.
After they hand you a glass, give it a nice swirl, look at the beauty of the color.
And go easy on that swirl so you don’t slosh it out, speaking from an expert.
Next, you want to smell the wine, yep put your nose in the glass take a deep breath and enjoy the aroma of the wine.
Now, that first sip. Notice how the wine taste and even feels in your mouth, and then swish it around on your tongue before swallowing. You may have a different taste in your mouth after doing this, so don’t rush to swallow. Now, take another taste and see if you taste it differently.
Sampling rooms will have a little bowl of crackers or bread, be sure and cleanse your palate before the next tasting, as it will surely affect the taste of the next wine.
If you are not really sure about the wine varieties, be sure and ask, our Texas wine makers love to tell you all about their wonderful “fruit of the vine”. Also, if you aren’t sure about the words they are using, please ask. Wine making has it’s very own terminology and they love to tell you all about it.
If you don’t like a wine, just be polite and say, I don’t think it’s my favorite, try not to be negative, as we all have different taste. And the wine makers don’t want to hear your negative opinion just because it’s not your taste.
All our wonderful Texas Hill Country Wineries have so many offerings for you to try. Please go to as many as you can and help support a very fast growing industry in Texas.
And always remember, if you are going to several wineries for tastings, have a designated driver to get you home.
enjoy! Deb
